There is a lot going on this week. In reading/language arts and social studies the students are continuiing their research on slavery in the American colonies. The students are getting ready to present their research to their "jigsaw" group. In addition to presenting, students will have the opportunity to learn how to take notes as someone speaks. Finally, they will be putting all their new knowledge about slavery into a 5 paragraph essay. This is a big project with lots of learning.
For science this quarter, the students have Mrs. Goetsch.
In math the students move onto Topic 6: Multiplying Decimals
In spelling, the Lesson 15 test will be Monday. The students will get their new list and spelling rule on Wednesday. I'll post the new list and rule after Monday.
In addition to all the learning going on, the students have DARE once a week. This past lesson was on facts and health effects of tobacco and alcohol. The students were amazed at some of the information Officer Zwicky presented.
Last week the school was entertained by the high school band. They learned about the different instruments and the sounds they make. Many of my students expressed an interest in playing an instrument. The fifth graders also got a taste of what middle school orchestra and choir are like. A handful of middle schoolers came over and played and sang for the fifth graders. Next week the students will get a chance to try out the various instruments and mouthpieces and determine if they are interested in playing in the band or orchestra. More information will come home about this great opportunity.
Lastly, our class has been paired up with Mrs. Sirianni's kindergarteners for Reading Buddies. Each Friday the students will meet up and read with each other. Friday was our first meeting and everyone enjoyed reading with their buddy. It's going to be a great experience for all the students.
