Spelling at the 5th grade level is actually a word study and vocabulary program from the Benchmark Education Company. Benchmark is the new reading and writing curriculum the district adopted this year.
In the word study and vocabulary lessons, my students will learn strategies for decoding, spelling and understanding the meaning of multisyllabic words. Each unit lasts 5 days. The first day is the introduction of the word study concept for the week. The students will also get a core list of words which will be assessed on the fifth day. On days 2-4 the students will engage in various activities which are designed to help them understand and master the concept. On the fifth day the students will be tested on the core words as well as their understanding of the concept.
Because our schedule is sometimes disrupted, I am not always able to begin and end a unit on the same days of the week. Therefore, check your child's Study Buddy to see when the assessment day will be.
I will post the word study concept and core words in this space. Your child will also have the list in their Study Buddy.
